Scam detection on Pixel phones could be coming to outgoing calls, as newly discovered evidence of changes to the feature points to Google developing a way for the AI-powered tool to scan for potential scam identifiers even if you initiated the phone call.
Scam detection works just like it sounds. The AI listens for key factors that a call might be scam and then alerts the user of this possibility. At the moment this works on incoming calls only. A person calls you up, and if the AI is listening in, it can pick up on those little details that are typically associated with scam calls, and then alert you.
Google’s Phone app hints at outgoing call scam detection
According to a new report from Android Authority, the beta version of Google’s Phone app has a flag in it that points to Google currently developing the scam detection for outgoing calls. The flag reads: enableSharpieOnOutgoingCalls. That’s all the information about this feature so far. However, the flag being found inside the Phone app, where the incoming calls portion of this feature already exists, is an indicator that Google is currently working on this.
As Android Authority notes, the flag doesn’t confirm any details like a release date or anything like that. Android Authority also states that they weren’t able to get the feature working. When and if Google rolls this out, users will have to opt in if they want the feature to run in the background. It will work automatically, but only if the user enables the toggle for it to be operational.
The op-in of course, is there because the feature is powered by Gemini and listening to your calls. All of this happens on the device, and Google doesn’t see or hear any of that data. Nevertheless, the user needs to give permission for it to do its job.
