It seems like OPPO is developing a 100-megapixel selfie camera for smartphones. The information comes from Digital Chat Station, one of the most prominent tipsters in the industry.
OPPO plans to deliver a 100MP 1:1 selfie camera with an Apple Center Stage-like feature
The tipster did not specifically mention OPPO, but the emoji he included in his post does suggest this is OPPO we’re talking about. The camera sensor in development is a 100-megapixel camera with a 1:1 aspect ratio.
This actually points to OPPO’s desire to replicate what Apple delivered with its Center Stage feature last year. It allows you to shoot in both horizontal and vertical orientations without the need to rotate the device.
Huawei is allegedly doing something similar
This is actually a very useful feature, and we’d love to see it implemented on Android devices as well. This is not the first time we’re hearing about a rumor like this. In February, the same source said that both OPPO and Huawei are considering 1:1 selfie cameras.
Such camera sensors will allow users to capture a wider FoV. It’s not only useful for a feature such as center stage, but it will be useful for video calls, short-form content creation, and so on.
As a reminder, in the iPhone 17, Apple is using a 24-megapixel selfie camera. OPPO is looking to beat that with a 100-megapixel unit, which will deliver considerably higher resolution to the table.
We’re not sure when this camera will see the light of day
We’re not sure when this camera sensor will be implemented in one of OPPO’s smartphones, though. At the moment, it’s just a rumor without a projected release date. This is a trusted source, though, and it’s not the first time he’s talking about this. So… it seems like it’s happening.
