Most apps come with their own widgets that you can place on your home screen or lock screen. For the most part, they’re functional, but what if you wanted a widget that could do exactly what you wanted? If you’re a Samsung phone owner, the upcoming One UI 9.5 update could introduce a custom widget feature.
One UI 9.5 could support custom widget building
According to a post on X by tipster Fahad Ali Javed, it seems that Samsung is building a custom widget feature into One UI 9.5. This feature is apparently going to be known as “My Custom Widget,” which as its name implies, will let users design and build widgets that are catered specifically to their needs.
At the moment, it is unclear how Samsung’s widget builder will work. However, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard of such a feature. Earlier this year, Google announced the “Create My Widget” tool. This is an AI-powered feature that lets users describe what kind of widget they want for their Android device and it will create one for them.

This is a huge improvement over current third-party widget apps. There are several such apps that let users build their own widgets. However, more often than not, it feels quite overwhelming, especially to beginners. Using AI seems like it would make it a lot simpler. That being said, we’re not sure if Samsung is employing the use of AI as well, but hopefully they are.
But honestly, given Google and Samsung’s close knit relationship, we wouldn’t be surprised if Samsung’s version was some variant of Google’s version.
What else is coming in the update?
The custom widget feature is a pretty cool one, but there are other features coming in the update that might be worth looking forward to as well. This includes how Samsung is bringing a search bar to older phones. These are features that debuted with Samsung’s latest foldables, so it’s nice to see them coming to older devices too.
The company is also introducing new animations and design changes. We’re talking about a more glassy look that seems to borrow elements from Apple’s Liquid Glass UI. Samsung also upgraded its native Phone app, making it smarter and easier to use.
