Most photo editing apps come with built-in filters that let you adjust how an image looks, whether you want to turn it into a black and white image, give it a sepia tone, and so on. However, Google could be changing that by giving Snapseed for Android an upgrade with LUT support.
Snapseed for Android to get LUT support
According to the folks at Android Authority together with AssembleDebug, they discovered evidence that suggests that Snapseed for Android is getting LUT support. This was in the latest Snapseed v4.1.4.966755460 release for Android. This is actually a bigger deal than most of you might think.
For those unfamiliar, LUT stands for Look-Up Table. This is a data file typically used in more professional photo and video editing. It basically maps specific input color values to new output color values, ultimately changing the way a photo looks. The best part is that you don’t need to go tweaking knobs and sliders. Load in the LUT, apply it to the photo, and you’re all set.
The concept of LUTs isn’t new. Like we said, it’s usually used by professionals. However, the support for LUTs are commonly found on desktop software, like Adobe’s Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and so on. So, for a mobile app like Snapseed to get it is pretty cool. If you normally make your edits on the PC, now you can already start making them on your phone by importing your favorite LUTs.
An upgraded experience
Now we know that sometimes Google products can feel confusing. This is because the company can sometimes have two apps that seemingly do the same thing, like Waze and Google Maps, for example.
Google Photos has been steadily gaining a lot of new editing capabilities, so some users might be torn between using Google Photos versus Snapseed. But as we have seen, Google has been making changes to Snapseed to give it more “professional” capabilities. And the introduction of LUT support is one of them.
There’s no word on when this version of Snapseed will be released. But if you’re a professional, this is definitely an update to look forward to.
