Whenever Apple releases a new generation of Apple Silicon chips, they usually release multiple variants. There’s the base version, then the Pro, Max, and Ultra. However, for the M6, Apple might not release any other variants. This means that for those hoping for a more powerful variant of the OLED MacBook Pro, you’ll have to wait for the M7 which is coming in 2027.
OLED MacBook Pro will get M7 update in 2027
As you might have heard, Apple is working on an OLED MacBook Pro with touchscreen capabilities. However, instead of adopting the M6 or featuring more powerful versions of the M6, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman revealed that the laptop will instead come in M5 Pro and M5 Max configurations. That’s the same as the current MacBook Pro models.
If you wanted something newer and more powerful, like the M6 Pro, Max, or Ultra built on the 2nm process, that’s not happening. Instead, you might have to wait for the 2027 M7 OLED MacBook Pro. Honestly, the M5 Pro and Max chips are already incredibly powerful. You might miss out on some of the benefits of a 2nm chip, but for some, maybe that’s not that big a deal.
According to Gurman, Apple has decided to save its resources and not invest too much into the M6 series. Instead, the company is focusing on the M7 chips, which will apparently be better for AI workloads. To that end, a lower-end MacBook Pro with the base M7 will arrive in 2027, with the more powerful M7 Ultra scheduled for the first half of 2028.
This also means that we probably won’t see a refresh of the Mac Studio next year either.
Apple’s next laptop is coming soon
Speaking of the OLED MacBook Pro, we should have more details about it later this month. According to the rumors, Apple has another event scheduled towards the end of October. The company recently unveiled its smart home products at an event earlier this week, and they apparently have more products to announce by the end of October.
This includes a touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro and possibly a new M6-powered iMac and entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro. The iPad mini is also rumored to get an OLED update. Either way, we should have more details soon enough.
