The Take A Message feature on Pixel phones is seemingly getting an expansion to non-Pixel phones, and quite honestly this is the best thing that non-Pixel phone owners could hope for when it comes to exclusive features.
If you’re not familiar with the Take A Message function, it operates as part of the phone’s voicemail system and it does a few different things. First, and what’s likely to be the most useful function, is that it can transcribe your voicemails for you. This allows you to read the transcripts instead of having to listen to the message. The downside is that this doesn’t always work, but it’s usually because no actual message was left, and it just sits on a silent static for the duration of the voicemail because the person hung up. This happens commonly with spam calls.
For those callers which do leave voicemail messages, however, the transcription can be a real boon. It also has the ability to recognize spam that was left in messages too. So you know pretty much right away if a voicemail is important or not. Sounds useful, right? Well, you might not need a Pixel phone much longer to access this feature.
The Pixel phone’s Take A Message function could see an expansion to other phones
It’s worth noting that Google has not confirmed this yet but it seems likely. A report from Android Authority shows that references to this were found in the code of Phone by Google app. These bits of code indicate a shift to bring the feature to other Android devices. It isn’t clear which devices might be supported. However, as Android Authority points out, this feature is available on some older devices. Google offers it on phones as old as the Pixel 6.
So, any phones that came out in late 2021 and beyond might end up with it. In addition to expanding beyond non-Pixel phones, this feature is also potentially expanding to other countries. The same bits of code make references to regions that include Mexico, Singapore, Taiwan, Poland, Portugal and several other European countries.
Google recently expanded on this feature for Pixel phones by adding custom greetings. It’s not clear if all the current functions will make the jump to non-Pixel phones, though.
