If you are a Nest Cam user, you’ll know that the device works as intended with no major complaints. But it’s the Familiar Faces feature that has mostly been a let-down for years. As a refresher, it relies on face detection and a library of faces to recognize people and alert you when they’re at the door. However, the problem is that it doesn’t really work as advertised by the brand. Finally, things may change for good. Google Home seems to have a proper plan to fix “Familiar Faces” on Nest Cam.
Google Home Familiar Faces could soon recognize people more accurately
In addition to a bunch of other updates announced earlier this week, Google Home is rolling out new behind-the-scenes changes to the Nest Cam’s Familiar Faces feature. For context, this isn’t the first time that Google has addressed this. The company has been trying to fix this for a while now. Even the Gemini upgrade didn’t really help. Hopefully, things get better this time.
As a part of the update, Google notes that it will begin automatically updating the Familiar Faces library to save the “most recent and accurate examples.” It’ll also take things like clothing info in cases where the face isn’t visible in the shot. The company claims that by focusing on the best examples and using these new signals, it intends to reduce missed or incorrect identifications and make managing the library easy.
Rolling out right now
These changes do sound practical and promising, at least on paper. Before this, Google would simply go through the whole library of identified faces. It was easy for things to go wrong. This new change will apparently focus on the most recent results. Things should ideally get better over time, as Google claims.
The update is rolling out right now to Nest Cam users with Google Home Premium in the Early Access program.
