As many of you know, Motorola announced the Edge 70 Max smartphone recently. That phone kind of emphasized the company’s biggest problem, and that’s Android updates aka support.
Motorola can’t decide how long it will support its latest smartphone
Why are we mentioning this? Well, in that article, we used the information provided by Motorola. It said that the phone will get up to 3 years of OS updates and 5 years of Android security updates (through July 2031). That, on its own, is below the standard some smartphone OEMs said, but it’s fine, many would say. That’s not the end of it, though.
There’s a footnote included, however, which goes against what is written in the spec section. The footnote explains that this includes “2 OS upgrades and up to 3 years of security updates starting from the global launch date.”
Conflicting information all ove the place
Needless to say, this contradicts the company’s official specs. Writing up to 3 years of OS updates, and then clarifying that it’s actually 2 years of OS upgrades on the same page doesn’t make much sense, does it?
What makes even less sense is the information regarding security update support. In the specs, it says 5 years of security updates (not up to 5 years), and then in the footnote it says “3 years of security updates starting from the global launch date.” That makes even less sense than the info regarding OS updates.

The footnote does say that this policy varies by region, so it may just be a mistake. Other Motorola Edge 70 Max regional listings lack the same 2031 date, 9to5Google notes. In Sweden, for example, Motorola only promises OS and security updates for 3 years.
What makes this situation even weirder is the fact that the EU EPREL label says updatea re provided for 7 years. So, needless to say, there’s a lot of confusion here regarding updates.
