Artificial intelligence is moving fast from basic conversational tools to highly autonomous systems. The head of Microsoft‘s AI division knows exactly where the industry is heading. In a long interview with The Verge, Mustafa Suleyman, the CEO of Microsoft AI, left some pretty interesting headlines, like his belief that true software superintelligence is no longer a distant sci-fi fantasy. Rather, it is actively approaching the tech industry’s immediate horizon.
While it may sound very optimistic, Suleyman clarified that his perspective is not built on mere speculation. Instead, it’s based on empirical data tracking more than a decade of compounding technological progress. Over the last fifteen years, the underlying transformer-based models powering the industry have experienced a massive trillion-fold increase in computing power.
What does true superintelligence actually mean?
Terms like artificial general intelligence (AGI) and the technological singularity frequently muddy public discourse. However, Suleyman distinguishes true superintelligence through two distinct breakthroughs. First, the software must demonstrate an ability to actively invent entirely new knowledge. Instead of simply summarizing or reorganizing human data libraries, a superintelligent system will possess the cognitive capacity to make original scientific discoveries and teach us concepts we do not yet comprehend.
Second, a superintelligent system must master autonomous self-improvement. This means the model can independently formulate hypotheses, create its own targeted training datasets to test those parameters, and eventually redesign its own underlying code to accelerate its development.
Anxious about automation? Your job is likely safe
Naturally, a word as weighty as ‘superintelligence’ triggers mass workplace automation and job displacement anxiety. However, Suleyman has a more optimistic view of what this technology means for the workforce. While admitting that AI capabilities are advancing at a breakneck pace, he predicts a future in which specialized AI assistants will work alongside humans, not replace them.
That’s why Microsoft’s new, independent Superintelligence team is diving straight into improving these agentic workflows. The goal is to create digital sidekicks that are extremely dependable and can lessen administrative overhead by performing multi-step tasks. This shift frees human workers from routine data processing tasks so they can concentrate their energies on strategic supervision, creative fine-tuning and qualitative judgment.
Standing on its own two feet
To turn this vision into a reality, Microsoft is deliberately restructuring its internal engineering culture to achieve true independence. A critical contract update finalized late last year officially granted Microsoft the operational freedom to independently pursue its own proprietary frontier models alongside its long-term partnership with OpenAI.
Lastly, Suleyman emphasized that Microsoft cannot remain structurally dependent on third-party intellectual property for what will reshape the tech world. The company is working on optimizing everything from raw hardware compute efficiency to proprietary data curation protocols. This way, the tech giant aims to systematically dictate the trajectory of the upcoming superintelligence era.
