Samsung is always filing new patents for different things, but one recently filed patent caught everyone’s attention. And it’s for a new foldable, rollable phone that has a display on all sides.
The new patent shows a very strange design for a smartphone (still not as strange as the Cyrcle Phone 2.0), which basically looks like a brick. Samsung is combining its foldable, bendable, and rollable display expertise to imagine a new type of device.
Now it is important to emphasize that not all patents end up becoming devices. This could be used in a different product, and look totally different, or end up not being used at all.
The patent shows that the phone can be unfolded to reveal a wide screen, like a lot of the foldable phones on the market today. But the display can be rolled out even further to create a much larger screen. So you’re looking at a foldable that is also a rollable.
This is probably not very practical
Just from the images from the patent, this really does not look very practical. But it would give new meaning to your phone, feeling like a brick in your pocket. This wouldn’t be very pocketable, at least in its current state. One also can’t help but wonder how bad that display is going to look after a few hundred opens and unrollings. It would be cool for Samsung to show at something like IFA or MWC, but as a mass product, I really don’t see it… yet.
As I mentioned already, this is just a patent, and it doesn’t mean that a phone that’s both a foldable and a rollable is coming anytime soon. Hell, Samsung hasn’t even shown a prototype rollable phone yet; only Samsung Display has, and it’s not fully working. The display works, but the OS doesn’t really work.
