This year we expect that both Qualcomm and MediaTek will launch new flagship chipsets built on TSMC’s 2nm process. This is a huge deal, and we might know what MediaTek has up its sleeves soon. This is because the company has confirmed the launch date for its upcoming MediaTek Dimensity 9600 chipsets.
MediaTek Dimensity 9600 chipsets launch date revealed
According to a post on X by tipster Abhishek Yadav, the MediaTek Dimensity 9600 launch date has been confirmed for September 15, 2026. According to the tipster, MediaTek is expected to launch two versions of the chipset. This comes in the form of the regular Dimensity 9600 and a Pro version.
While we should have all the official details next week, here’s what we can look forward to. Yadav’s post claims that the Pro version will be built on TSMC’s 2nm process. It will feature an 8-core configuration with two prime cores clocked at 4.55GHz, three performance cores coming in at 4.35GHz, and three efficiency cores clocking in at 3.10GHz. It will also use a Mali-G2 Ultra NX MC12 GPU.
As for the regular Dimensity 9600, here’s where it gets interesting. It seems that MediaTek is using TSMC’s 3nm process for this version. This isn’t to say it won’t be powerful, but it might miss out on some performance and efficiency gains from 2nm. However, at the same time, using the 3nm process could make it more affordable.
Going the Qualcomm route
It’s actually kind of fascinating to see the strategy chipset makers are adopting this year. In the past, most chipset makers would launch one flagship chipset. They might follow up with a variant, but there’s usually only one main chipset. However, this year we’re seeing Qualcomm and MediaTek adopt a different approach.
According to the rumors, Qualcomm is also expected to launch a base variant and a Pro version of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. One of the main differences is that the Pro version will support LPDDR6 RAM, so some phone makers might adopt it for their highest-tier devices.
Either way, we should have more details about MediaTek’s new chips next week.
