Before the arrival of the mighty Dimensity 9600 series chips, MediaTek has launched a new 4G chip for affordable phones. The chip in question is the MediaTek Helio G99+, which is now listed on its official website. At its core, it’s essentially the same as the Helio G99, based on a 6nm TSMC design, but with upgrades to the memory department. Here’s what’s on offer.
MediaTek Helio G99+ adds faster LPDDR5X memory and 120Hz displays
The MediaTek Helio G99+ features two ARM Cortex-A76 cores at 2.2GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores at 2.0GHz. Taking care of the graphics is the Mali-G57 MC2 GPU. The chip offers support for UFS 2.2 storage, and for the memory upgrade, there’s LPDDR5X (up to 5500 Mbps) RAM support. This is a jump from LPDDR4X.
There’s also an Intelligent Resource Management Engine that ensures sustained performance and smoother gameplay that lasts longer. The Helio G99+ offers support for up to a 108MP camera and dual cameras up to 16MP for selfies. It can support displays up to FHD+ (2520 x 1080) resolution with a 120Hz refresh rate, without needing extra DSC hardware.Â
The MediaTek Intelligent Display Sync technology is claimed to improve the power efficiency of the displays by dynamically adjusting the refresh rate when needed. It can play back H.264, H.265/HEVC, VP-9, and playback videos at up to 2K 30fps, FHD 60fps, and HD 120fps.
Based on the 6nm TSMC process
There’s a Cat-13 4G model with dual VoLTE all carry over. 4×4 MIMO and 256QAM offer reliable connectivity even in areas of high network traffic. Other connectivity options also include Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.2. As you can tell, the chip features pretty moderate hardware and is especially suitable for affordable phones where there’s still a market for 4G Android phones. The upgrade to LPDDR5x gives phone makers a little more flexibility.
This isn’t MediaTek’s first small update to the G99 series. Chips like the G100 and G200 brought minor camera and GPU improvements while keeping the same basic architecture.Â
