The brand behind Apple’s satellite connectivity, Globalstar, was recently acquired by Amazon. In its statement, Amazon said it would work closely with Apple to develop a stronger and more reliable smartphone satellite connectivity network. And now, a new leak has revealed a list of upcoming iPhone satellite connectivity features.
Apple is working on four new iPhone satellite connectivity features
A new report reveals that the upcoming iPhone models, particularly those powered by Apple’s C2 modem, will gain support for 5G satellite connectivity. The support will dramatically improve current limitations, where satellite connections are slow and restricted to basic messaging. 5G satellite connectivity means the users will be able to use all the services and apps on their phones, just like how they do with a cellular network.
Another report from Bloomberg suggests Apple is changing how its phones connect to satellite networks. The updated method is said to reduce the effort required by users to establish a signal in challenging environments.
Apple Maps will soon gain a satellite connectivity feature
Apart from the 5G satellite connectivity and improved connection method, the company is also working on enabling support for Apple Maps over satellite, allowing navigation even without cellular or Wi Fi access. Further, Apple plans to expand messaging capabilities by enabling photo sharing through satellite connections. The tech giant is also planning to allow third-party apps to integrate satellite connectivity features.
If all the features are enabled in the upcoming iPhones, it would change how Apple users access satellite connectivity. Until now, satellite connectivity meant basic SMS services. But that finally seems to be changing soon. Also, keep in mind that the firm has not shared any official words on the features yet. There’s no guarantee that all the above-mentioned features will be enabled in future iPhones. Current rumors suggest the iPhone 18 series may become the first lineup to officially support these features.
