When you buy a new phone and it breaks within a few hours of you getting it, most of the time, companies will give you a replacement on the spot. However, it seems that Apple refuses to honor the warranty of an iPhone Duo, whose owner claims the screen broke in a matter of hours.
Apple refuses to honor broken iPhone Duo warranty
In a post on Reddit by user chimchambam, they claim that they ordered iPhone Duo from Verizon. They used the phone for a few hours, making sure to be careful with the inner display. However, in about 3 hours, the screen cracked.
According to the user, “I only opened and closed it like a book, taking extra care to never press on the crease. I went to open and I felt the dreaded resistance everyone else with a broken one reports (felt perfect every other time before this).”
They then added, “I closed it and tried very gently to open it again and was met with the resistance again.. Tried to close and open it one more time, and on the 3rd time, at about the halfway point of opening it there was a pop and the display looks as you see it pictured.”
We get that when making millions of a device, there are bound to be a few that slip past QC. OP was actually rather understanding of this, and tried to take it back to Apple to get it replaced. Unfortunately Apple refuses to honor the warranty of the iPhone Duo. The OP claims that the staff at the Apple store essentially tried to say it was their fault. The staff also said they should have gotten insurance.
Then what?
OP says they didn’t want to make a fuss at the store and left. When they reached out to Verizon, they were told they could get a replacement. However, it might not arrive until months later. Ultimately, OP decided to return it under warranty to Verizon. They also noted that they’ll probably skip the iPhone Duo and maybe wait for the next-gen.
That being said, it’s worth noting that AppleCare+ is a good idea if you’re planning to get the iPhone Duo. The prices Apple charges for out-of-warranty repairs is ridiculously high. Paying for AppleCare+ would actually save you more money in the long run.
