Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo are expected to open next month. Unfortunately, reports out of China have suggested that there are production problems with the iPhone Duo. At this rate, it might be an extremely difficult phone to get your hands on at launch time.
iPhone Duo runs into production problems
According to the reports, Apple has yet to solve the production problems related to the iPhone Duo. Sources close to Foxconn told Chinese media outlet Jiemian News that production yield is sitting at 60%. This means that out of every 100 units produced, only 60 pass the quality standards test.
At the rate this is going, assuming nothing changes, it might take anywhere between six months to an entire year for production to reach a mature yield. So by the time Apple’s production partners get up to speed, the second-gen iPhone Duo could be close to launch already.
This is actually not the first time we heard that the phone could be difficult to get at launch. But the better question is, why is this happening?
Strict requirements, complicated production
Based on what one source said, it seems that the low yields are apparently due to strict requirements from Apple. In fact, some suppliers are apparently hoping that Apple will relax some of its requirements to help accelerate production. We can’t say we blame them, but at the same time we’re hoping that won’t happen.
The iPhone Duo is the first foldable from Apple. The company arrived seven years after the first Samsung foldable launched. This means they had a lot of time sitting around and watching the competition. So to launch an inferior product that didn’t learn from the mistakes of its competitors would be some serious egg on their face. Plus, for a phone that costs $2,000, that’s unacceptable.
Also, it’s easy to see why production is running into difficulties. The hinge itself is said to be made from over 100 parts, making it an extremely complicated component. Plus foldables live and die by their hinge, so Apple needs to get it right.
Either way, we’ll have a better idea of the phone’s supply once pre-orders open on October 16.
