Apple has been dragging its feet on big sensor upgrades for years, but a new leak suggests the iPhone 21 might be the device that finally changes the game. According to a recent report from Ming-Chi Kuo (via Wccftech), Apple is testing a 200MP ultrawide camera with 8K video recording for its 2028 flagship. And honestly? It’s about time.
The 200MP sensor reportedly measures 1/1.2-inch, which is larger than the unit Samsung uses on the Galaxy S26 Ultra. That’s a notable detail, considering Samsung is expected to manufacture these sensors for Apple at its Austin, Texas, facility.
Why the Ultrawide Upgrade Matters
Here’s the thing. Apple’s ultrawide camera has been the weakest link in its smartphone lineup for years now. While Android competitors have been pushing massive sensors and higher resolutions on every lens, Apple has stuck with a 48MP ultrawide and zero hardware stabilization. The new leak says that’s finally changing.
The upgraded ultrawide is expected to gain Optical Image Stabilization, which would be a first for Apple’s 0.5x lens. Combined with 8K video recording capability, this puts the iPhone 21 in a position to actually compete with the camera-focused flagships from China and South Korea. Let’s be real, that’s a gap Apple has needed to close for a while.
Morgan Stanley previously reported that Apple is intentionally holding off on the 200MP jump until 2028 to diversify its supply chain away from Sony. Samsung’s involvement here is key, since the South Korean giant has been refining 200MP sensor tech across its own Galaxy flagships for years.
There are still question marks. A 200MP sensor squeezes individual pixels into a smaller footprint, which can hurt low-light performance. Apple will likely lean heavily on computational photography to clean things up, but the company has plenty of time to figure that out before launch. With the iPhone 21 still roughly two years away, expect a lot more leaks before anything is locked in.
