The Face ID you know on the iPhone 18 Pro series isn’t exactly the same one Apple used in previous devices. This is because Apple actually managed to stick it under the display, resulting in a smaller Dynamic Island. However, it seems to be causing some issues as some iPhone 18 Pro owners are reporting their phones are crashing and rebooting.
iPhone 18 Pro Face ID is causing issues
According to posts on Reddit, some users are running into problems with Face ID on their iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models. This happens when the user tries to launch a protected app that requires Face ID to unlock. This includes apps like Notes, Photos, banking apps, and so on.
When users try to use Face ID to authenticate themselves and it fails the first time, when they tap on “Try Face ID” again, the phone will lock up and stop responding to touch. After a few seconds, the phone will panic and reboot back to the lock screen. Note that this only happens with protected apps, not when trying to unlock the phone from the lock screen.
It is unclear what is causing the issue. However, the post on Reddit claims that Apple support suggested it might be a hardware issue and are offering a replacement unit. But not everyone thinks that’s the case. 9to5Mac believes that it is most likely a software issue that can be patched. We’re inclined to agree, especially if there are no issues unlocking the phone.
Not the first kerfuffle
It’s worth mentioning that this is actually the second issue with Face ID that we’ve come across. Last week, users were quick to discover that matte screen protectors do not play nicely with the iPhone 18 Pro series. This is because of the nature of matte screen protectors that can scatter the IR beam that Face ID uses to authenticate users. Swapping over to a clear screen protector fixes that.

It’s honestly not always possible to squash every bug during the beta. In any case, hopefully Apple will have a fix for the issue soon.
