Next week, Apple will officially take the wraps off iOS 27, its next major update to its mobile operating system. However, it seems that iOS 27 won’t be a particularly exciting update. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, iOS 28 is expected to be a more significant update over iOS 27.
iOS 28 might be more exciting than iOS 27
Now, the question is, should we be surprised? Not particularly. Apple, like Google, doesn’t necessarily make massive changes with every major OS update. Not only is that taxing from a development perspective, but also because they need to give users time to get used to the current update before introducing anything major.
In Apple’s case, iOS 26 was a major revamp, the biggest we’ve seen since possibly iOS 7. So with iOS 27, Apple might not make a big deal compared to iOS 28, and it makes sense. But what can we expect from iOS 28? It’s probably too soon to tell, but Gurman did say it will be “far more significant” compared to iOS 27.
The timing is also interesting. 2027 will be the iPhone’s 20th anniversary. Apple is expected to introduce a major iPhone redesign, one with a bezel-less display that curves around the edges. This is why it’s speculated that iOS 28 could actually be designed around those changes, making it more significant than this year’s release. If that’s true, it’ll be interesting to see what Apple will have in store for users.
But what can we expect from iOS 27?
That being said, even though iOS 28 could be more exciting, it doesn’t mean Apple is neglecting this year’s update. Instead, the upcoming iOS 27 update will focus more on AI and Apple Intelligence. One of the major changes is a revamped Siri, powered by a custom Google Gemini model.
This new version of Siri is expected to arrive as a standalone app, allowing users to use the app much like they would ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and so on. We also can probably look forward to the usual host of improvements, bug fixes, and general changes. In any case, we should have all the details next week during Apple’s WWDC 2026 event.
