Remember back in the day when your social media feed was things you actually wanted to see, like posts from friends? These days, social media is telling you what they think you want to see, and it’s kind of insidious. Earlier this month, Instagram launched Your Algorithm as a way to customize what you see, and now, the company is giving users more control over it.
Instagram gives users more ways to customize Your Algorithm
For those unfamiliar, Instagram isn’t completely ditching its algorithm yet. Some users might actually prefer that. For those who don’t, Your Algorithm basically gives users ways to customize their Instagram experience. This is done by selecting topics they are interested in. The company eventually plans to expand it to cover people, moods, vibes, content types, and more.
Now, Instagram is fine-tuning it further through the use of “quick signals.” In a post on Instagram by its chief Adam Mosseri, these quick signals basically act as a way for users to let the algorithm know what you’re interested in. For instance, you’re scrolling through Reels watching videos.
As you scroll to the next video, you will see a popup asking if this is something you might be interested in or if there are other topics you’d prefer to see. The company is also testing a “yes/no” type of feedback at the bottom, where you can tap on the checkmark to approve the video you’re watching or tap on “X” to show you’re not interested.
According to Mosseri, these quick signals are currently in testing. This means that not everyone might see them yet, and there’s a chance it could change in the future.
Not everyone is a fan
That being said, the comments on the post all seem to be saying the same thing. People just want to see content from people they actually follow. That completely makes sense. After all, apps like Facebook were initially launched as a way for people to stay connected. These days, it feels like you’re seeing suggested content more than posts from people you’re connected with.
It’s the same story for Instagram, where you come across posts and Reels from users you don’t know as well as advertisements. But to be fair, Mosseri did state that they do plan to eventually expand this customization to cover “people.” So maybe in the future, you might actually be able to filter content from people you actually follow.
