Instagram will now alert parents if their teen repeatedly tries to search for terms related to suicide or self-harm within a short period of time. This change is coming to parents who have enrolled in parental supervision on Instagram. These alerts will roll out in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada next week.
Instagram alerts parents via email, text, or WhatsApp
Instagram knows that the vast majority of teens do not search for suicide and self-harm content on the platform. But when they do, there’s already a policy in place to block these searches. With these new alerts, Instagram wants to make sure that parents are aware if their teen is repeatedly trying to search for such content so that they can support them.
Next week, Parents and teens enrolled in supervision will be notified that Instagram will start sending these new alerts to parents, based on their teen’s search activity. Searches that may trigger an alert include phrases promoting suicide or self-harm, phrases that suggest a teen wants to harm themselves, and terms like ‘suicide’ or ‘self-harm’.
Roll out in select regions
Instagram says alerts will be sent to parents via email, text, or WhatsApp, depending on the contact information they’ve given. There will also be an in-app notification, alerting parents about the search activity. Additionally, the notification will also have the option to view resources designed to help them approach conversations with their teen.
Instagram says the alert notifications will be available in other regions later this year. The social media platform says it will avoid sending these notifications unnecessarily, as overuse could reduce its overall effectiveness. Instagram will launch these notifications if a teen attempts to engage in conversations related to suicide with its AI chatbot.Â
