What makes one particular video more interesting and entertaining than another? Both can talk about the same subject matter, but one might be more engaging than the other. This is, in part, due to how a video is edited. A skilled editor knows how to maintain a video’s pacing and beat, but an amateur might not. Well, Instagram is leveling that playing field with a “First Draft” feature for Reels.
Instagram launches “First Draft” feature for Reels
In an announcement on Threads, Instagram is bringing a feature called “First Draft” aimed at Reels. The feature is supposed to make piecing together a Reels clip a lot simpler and faster than before.
Right now, the process of putting together a video is to toss in all your clips and edit them accordingly. But this isn’t the best way to edit them. For example, there might be a lot of pauses when you’re talking as you gather your thoughts. That could make a video feel draggy, and that’s what First Draft is trying to fix.
According to Instagram “Simply select your clips, and with one tap, it cuts the pauses and trims down your clips, so you have a starting point to build from in seconds.” Basically, First Draft helps users cut out all the unnecessary long pauses so that you have a video that’s faster paced and ready to go.
Now, don’t worry, Instagram says that everything is reversible. This means that if you don’t like the editing choices it made for you, you can always undo it. Users can also make further edits to refine the video, because as the name implies, this is a first draft.
Why not Edits?
That being said, some users are wondering why this feature is in Instagram and not in its Edits app. In case you’re unfamiliar, Edits is a dedicated video editing tool by Instagram. It’s the company’s answer to TikTok’s CapCut.
Honestly, it makes more sense for Instagram to launch the feature in Edits. After all, Edits has more editing tools and a better UI for video edits. Thankfully, Instagram isn’t opposed to the idea. In response to the question, one of Instagram’s developers says they’re willing to take a look.
However, whether or not it actually makes its way into the app is a different story. In any case, First Draft is only available on iOS for now. But we wouldn’t be surprised if it eventually made its way onto the Android version later on.
