The company behind the world’s leading 360-degree cameras confirmed to The Verge is quietly working on AI-powered smart glasses. While official specs remain under wraps, a granted patent for “wearable glasses” reveals an unusual engineering strategy aimed at solving facial fatigue.
Shifting weight off the face with a split-battery architecture
Insta360 won’t cram heavy lithium-ion batteries into the temples like Meta does with its smart glasses. Instead, the firm has in mind a split-battery setup, according to a patent. The main frames draw power through a thin, flexible cable connected to a separate battery pack worn elsewhere on the user’s body.
This modular layout drastically reduces physical weight on the nose bridge and ears. This should eliminate the strain caused by heavy onboard electronics during long recording sessions. While wearing a power cable introduces practical wire-management hurdles, the trade-off allows the frame design to feel much closer to standard everyday glasses.

So, entering wearable optics seems like a logical evolution.
