I went to see the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day yesterday. I did that because I was generally interested in the movie, of course, but in all honesty, I was also interested to see how Samsung’s product placement was handled.
Samsung replaced Sony as the brand used in Spider-Man movies
As many of you know by now, Samsung’s new foldables are a part of this movie. Sony’s Xperia phones were a part of it in the past, but Samsung’s devices took over. Samsung even released a full-fledged ad before the movie was released, and that ad was kind of cool. It was focused on the phones, but it was made as if you’re watching a small part of the movie.
Back when that ad was released, I said that I liked it, and that it shows how such ads should be handled. Then yesterday, I noticed that people on Reddit are complaining about Samsung’s product placement in the movie itself, saying that the movie is one big Samsung ad.
That only piqued my interest, and I was kind of curious. In other words, that became my second reason to watch the movie, basically. And now, that I sat down and actually watched the thing, I do believe people are pushing things too far.
There was one scene that felt like an ad for the Galaxy Z Flip 8, but that’s about it
There was only one scene in the movie where it was obvious that the Galaxy Z Flip 8 is the phone in question. In all other scenes where phones were used, you couldn’t tell if it’s a Samsung Galaxy phone or some other foldable.
Yes, there are a number of scenes that include foldable phones, but they don’t exactly feel out of place. Due to the way the plot is handled, those scenes fit right in. That one shot of the Galaxy Z Flip 8 did feel like an ad, but it was brief and, quite frankly, didn’t bother me at all.
In the scene, the phone sits on a table in tent mode, and Peter Parker aka Spider-Man, gets a notification on it. Every other scene basically blended phones into the movie itself; it did not really mess things up in any way.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra was also shown a couple of times, but it didn’t feel out of place
Some users are also complaining about the app that Ned (one of the characters) made in the movie. They claim it was made just to show off the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. Well, that app does fit nicely into the movie, and not a single scene with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra felt out of place to me personally. So I really do think that people are kind of exaggerating; that’s just me, though. You could be on the other side of the coin, of course.
