Samsung introduced hardware-level Privacy Display technology on the Galaxy S26 Ultra this year. The feature set a new benchmark for protecting sensitive screen content from shoulder surfers. However, toggling it still required navigating software shortcuts. Huawei is now taking that concept a step further with its newly launched MateBook Pro S—the world’s lightest laptop at just 798 grams—by pairing an own Privacy Display OLED tech with a dedicated physical switch.
Dual-pixel OLED tech meets smart side-angle blocking
At the core of the Huawei MateBook Pro S is a 14.2-inch 3.1K OLED panel built on an innovative dual-pixel array architecture. The panel houses two independent sets of sub-pixels within the same display area. One set handles normal, wide-angle viewing with rich colors and sharp clarity, while the second set restricts side-angle light emission.
When privacy mode is off, the screen offers standard wide viewing angles. But once enabled, the display dims and blacks out visuals from the sides, ensuring that anyone sitting next to you sees only a dark screen while you maintain clear visibility from the front. The laptop even includes smart detection features that trigger an on-screen alert if it senses someone peeping over your shoulder.
Why a physical privacy toggle makes a big difference
Samsung relies on software controls to enable/disable the feature on its flagship phone. On the other hand, Huawei placed a physical toggle switch directly on the side of the MateBook Pro S chassis. A quick flick of the button instantly activates privacy mode without needing to swipe down menus or disrupt your work.
As Android Authority notes, privacy screens at the hardware level are quickly becoming a trend in the tech industry. Samsung will likely roll out the Privacy Display tech across the entire Galaxy S27 range, and other big Android brands are working on similar implementations. Having a physical hardware switch sets a clever precedent for how convenient privacy controls ought to be on laptops—and potentially on future smartphones as well.
