
Ahead of next month’s official unveiling, HONOR has opted to confirm a number of specs of its Robot Phone that it has been showing off for nearly a year now.
Its Robot Phone is in partnership with ARRI, a German cinema equipment maker, and the two companies say that it brings film-industry imaging tools to a smartphone for the first time. It’ll sport a triple-rear-camera setup, with the main camera being a 200-megapixel 1/1.28″ sensor with an f/1.6 aperture that is mounted on the phone’s three-axis gimbal. It’s paired with a 50-megapixel ultrawide camera and a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera.
HONOR is using its own in-house chip for the Robot Phone, called the Yuguang H1. This is paired with a gimbal motor that HONOR says weighs just 2.6g, and the motor is 65% smaller with 35% higher torque density than typical gimbal motors on the market today.
HONOR has inked over 100 patents for the Robot Phone.
With the Robot Phone, HONOR has also built a real-time image processing system that is able to run directly on the device. It includes tools for white balance, exposure, tone control, glare reduction, and detail enhancement across multiple cameras. There’s a new stabilization engine as well, called AIMAGE 2.0, which will help keep footage steady whether the user is standing still or moving.

HONOR also confirmed that this new imaging system from the Robot Phone will be powering future devices, including the Magic 9 series. That’s not a huge surprise, as it wouldn’t make sense to pour that much R&D into a single niche device and not bring it to other phones they’ll be selling in the future.
ARRI and HONOR are also planning to open a joint imaging lab, to continue developing camera technologies for phones. We’ve seen this with other brands like Xiaomi and Leica, OPPO and Hasselblad, to name a few.
