Apple used to have an advantage over other companies when it came to their chipsets. Being one of TSMC’s largest customers, Apple had access to the company’s latest technology when it came to semiconductors. But now, it looks like Google might beat Apple to the punch with a new 2nm Tensor chip on the Pixel 11 before the iPhone.
Pixel 11 could feature 2nm chip before the iPhone
According to the reports, Google is expected to debut the Pixel 11 with a new 2nm Tensor chip before the iPhone. For those unfamiliar, the Pixel 11 is expected to launch with the Tensor G6 chip. It might be one of the first phones to use TSMC’s 2nm process for it.
Apple, on the other hand, is expected to launch its new iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and iPhone Ultra later this September. Assuming Apple sticks to their plan, the phones will debut with the A20 Pro. That will be Apple’s first chipset built on TSMC’s 2nm process. However, seeing as how Google confirmed its Made By Google event for mid-August, the company could beat Apple to the punch by about a month.
That being said, don’t expect too much from the Tensor G6. Yes, there will be improvements due to the use of the 2nm process. However, the rumors claim that Google isn’t chasing raw performance. Instead, the company’s goal for the Tensor G6 is improved battery life and enhancing on-device AI tasks.
It should still represent an improvement over the Pixel 10. But it seems unlikely that it will be leaps and bounds better. Other than the new Tensor G6, our exclusive leaked Pixel 11 renders suggest that not much will change in terms of design.
Other chipsets are coming
That being said, if the reports are true, Google wouldn’t be the first to launch 2nm chips. That honor actually goes to Samsung, who launched the Galaxy S26 series earlier this year. Some models were configured with the Exynos 2600, which was the first commercially-available 2nm chip.
Qualcomm and MediaTek are expected to follow up with their own 2nm chips later this year. But for now, the more exciting headline is that Google, who some might say was late to the custom chip game, could be beating Apple to it.
