Google’s famed statues that sit around its campus have been a staple part of the experience for Google fans anytime a new one is revealed, and now you can add the giant G statue to that list as the company recently gave it a fresh coat of paint. This is not an entirely new statue, rather it’s the same 15 foot-tall G statue that Google had on campus before, but it now comes with a paint job that mirrors what Google has designed for the G logo across its services to better evoke its “AI era.“
The new gradient look required bringing in a specialist and having them blend the paints together before it was hand-painted, which Google says gives it “a little extra human character” and is now the reason why Google will be calling it the ‘Super G.’
Google says the new paint on the G statue required quite a bit of planning
No matter if your paint job is big or small, you can’t just toss some paint on whatever it is you’re painting and call it a day. At least not where 15 foot-tall statues are concerned, according to Google. In a post on the company’s official Life at Google X account page, it says the team managing the new paint job had to “engineer and plan for materials that are both flexible and resilient, and dodge unpredictable weather windows.” This is in addition to bringing in that specialist to hand-blend the paint before painting the entire surface by hand.
The statue is made of concrete, and concrete is quite porous. So bringing in someone to hand-blend just the right amount of each paint was likely a necessary part of the whole process to make sure things turned out the way Google wanted visually. In addition to sharing details of the updated paint job, Google also shared some images of the new look.
