Ahead of Google I/O, the Android team is once again hosting “The Android Show | I/O Edition” on May 12 at 10 AM PT. This is where Google is likely to announce Android 17 officially, now that we’ve made it through the beta process, as well as a few other announcements. In the YouTube description, Google says that “this is going to be one of the biggest years for Android yet.”
A lot of that could be hinting at Android XR. We are expecting a handful of smart glasses from different brands that are using Android XR this year. This includes Google itself, Samsung, Gucci, and even XREAL.
Currently, there’s only one Android XR product on the market, which is the Galaxy XR headset. It’s quite a bit cheaper than Apple’s version, but it’s still out of reach for most people.
The video was unlisted on YouTube and has since been removed. This could mean that Google is looking to post a more substantial teaser in the next couple of weeks. But it’s unlikely that the show was canceled.
What Google announced last year at The Android Show | I/O Edition
Last year, in this first annual edition of The Android Show | I/O Edition, Google announced quite a few new things. Like Material 3 Expressive, which was available in beta at Google I/O the year before. They also announced Find Hub, essentially Google’s answer to Apple’s Find My network, and a huge Gemini expansion to Android Auto, Wear OS, and Google TV.
However, at Google I/O itself, we did still see Android have a presence during the opening keynote. With Android XR being a pretty big focal point at the end. Where Shahram Izadi, head of Android XR, showcased the new Android XR Glasses. Google also did demos with the glasses for attendees, but it was clear that it was very early. And we are expecting them to launch this year.
