Gemini AI, once popular for its clean and ad-free experience, is soon getting ads as Google prepares for a major change to its ad policy. The tech giant has not finalized a decision yet. However, a recent statement from a top executive suggests that the company is actively exploring ways to monetize its AI chatbot without compromising its core user experience.
Gemini AI is soon getting ads as Google prepares for an overhaul
During the Q1 2026 earnings call, Philipp Schindler, chief business officer at Google, said they’re “open-minded” to exploring the possibilities of ads inside the Gemini app. The statement is quite literally the opposite of what was said earlier. Back in January, senior executives had said that they had no plans to put ads in the Gemini app.
Google may soon add advertisements to the Gemini app if the current experiment proves beneficial. Further, the company is already testing ad formats in AI Overviews and its new AI Mode for Search. Schindler has added that if these formats are proven useful and user-friendly, they could be extended to Gemini in the future. The executive has also said the ads are “helpful commercial information” rather than just interruptions.
Google has long been discussing ads for Gemini AI
This is not the first time that Google has explored the idea of putting ads inside the Gemini app. Back in December 2025, Adweek reported that Google had already discussed ad plans for Gemini with marketing agencies. This suggests the company was preparing for the move months ago. It’s only now that an official has made a public statement related to it.
Gemini currently offers several paid plans with added advantages. However, the subscription costs may not be enough for the brand to support the fast pace of AI development. Therefore, it is now considering adding ads to boost revenue and invest that into the AI infrastructure growth.
