Back in June, Google rolled out the first major OTA update of the year for the Google TV Streamer. As you’d expect, there are some bug fixes and other improvements, but most importantly, it also added support for Thread 1.4. Now, Google is extending the same Thread 1.4 update to Nest devices, including the company’s smart displays and mesh system.

Going into details, one Reddit user reported that their Nest Hub has been upgraded to Thread 1.4. Several users in the comments confirmed they’ve also received the update. The list of devices that have reportedly received the update includes the Nest Hub, Nest Hub Gen 2, Nest Hub Max, and Nest Wi-Fi Pro. That’s quite a big list covering the popular models.
For those unaware, Thread is a connectivity protocol that acts as Matter’s communication layer. Matter is the universal language smart home devices use to communicate, while Thread is the wireless technology that carries those messages between devices. It uses a mesh network, allowing devices to pass signals to one another.
Makes device setup easier
In that context, what makes this upgrade to Thread 1.4 notable is that it standardizes credential sharing. This should make it easier for third-party apps and smart home devices to securely join an existing Thread network. Additionally, Thread 1.4 also reduces response latency, minimizes random device disconnects, and brings other reliability improvements.
Interestingly, Google has not made any official announcement about this rollout yet. It seems to be a silent release at this point. To that extent, one commenter in the Reddit thread takes a dig at the company, saying, “You think they would announce this somewhere.” They’re not entirely wrong, though. Google does have a habit of quietly rolling out updates, and this appears to be another example.
