Anyone who has used Google Messages knows that there is very little to no room for chat customization. With Samsung finally embracing Google Messages over its in-house messaging app, it seems Google has started paying a little more attention to the personalization part. The news comes via Android Authority, which has reportedly spotted traces of customization tools in the code strings of the beta version of the Google Messages app.
Google Messages may finally add long-awaited customization options
In the latest beta build (messages.android_20260410_02_RC00), new code strings point towards theme customization controls. Per the spotted code strings, it appears that Google is developing a full “Custom” theme section.
Now, you must be wondering what are the things you can customize, right? Well, you may be able to change background styles and adjust bubble color in the app. That said, uploading your photos to chat wallpapers is one of the biggest customization options possibly coming to Google Messages. The company appears to also be working on Photos integration with Messages. References like “Upload photo” and “Your photo” are strong indicators of the same.
Meanwhile, options like “Theme Preview” and “Apply” hint at the upcoming customization options in Google Messages. Moving on, other references hinting at backgrounds and bubble colors suggest that you might be able to fully customize Google Messages. Google appears to be giving you the freedom of personalizing its messaging app rather than locking you into preset themes.
The company appears to be targeting both its own user base and Samsung’s
As of now, it’s still unclear whether this feature would ever roll out to the masses. If it does, many users who have asked for personalization options inside Google Messages would be more than happy. If you are wondering how come all of a sudden Google is giving priority to customization in the Messages app, well, Samsung users are most likely the reason behind this change. Many have raised their concerns about Google Messages not matching the level of personalization offered by Samsung Messages. Maybe, it is Google’s way of saying, we know what you want, and we are delivering it soon.
