Google Messages is already feature-rich, offering nearly everything you’d expect from a modern-day messaging app. But that is not stopping the company from making it a little better. In one such instance, Google Messages’s search function is about to get an update to improve its usability further. In the latest beta version of the Messages app, there is evidence of a new search interface. This makes it easier to find content in conversations.
Google Messages update may bring a revamped search experience
Folks at Android Authority, while digging through the beta version of the Google Messages app (messages.android_20260727_03_RC00.phone.openbeta_dynamic), have discovered signs of a new, updated search interface. There are a couple of major differences here in this new layout. One, the search bar has reportedly moved from the top of the screen to the bottom. This should make it easier to access.
Besides that, Google has also replaced the chips near the top of the screen that show the different things you can search with large preview areas showing images, videos, and links shared/received in Messages.
Search results are also getting a refresh
The search results screen is also getting a refresh. In the current version, searches return a list of compact results highlighting the term you’re searching for in each. However, the upcoming update, which is still in progress, separates chats and messages in search results and adds large previews for messages that match your search term. All these changes seem to be primarily focused on improving usability.
That said, it’s worth noting that these changes are still work in progress. It’s unclear how far along this search overhaul is in terms of development or when Google plans to roll it out to users at the moment. As always, we’ll keep an eye on its public release and update as and when that happens.
