Google Meet on Android Auto is now finally rolling out more widely, after nearly two months of waiting. The company certainly took its time on this, as first reports of Meet arriving in cars popped up in mid-April. But now, all Android Auto users should reportedly be able to get Google Meet on the platform.
Google Meet on Android Auto is now reportedly rolling out more widely
As reported by 9to5Google, Google Meet is now reaching more users. As a refresher, the news about Meet coming to Android Auto came out back in April, but it was apparently a limited rollout at the time. Now, however, things are finally changing. Folks at 9to5Google have tested a few devices in their cars and found the app now being more widely available than before.
The car’s infotainment system is showing notifications and even letting users use the conference-calling system in their cars. It’s worth noting that the app only lets you join audio-only meetings. There’s no video calling, which is understandable considering safety concerns.
Users can join audio-only meetings
Getting the app to work with Android Auto does seem to be a bit tricky. When launching for the first time, you’ll reportedly have to open and restart the Meet app on your phone before it works normally. Once that’s done, though, you will have easy access to your calls as usual. The report notes that during their testing, there was no warning about limited access for Workspace accounts. The setup/onboarding process was apparently smooth.
There’s a tab for “Scheduled” calls or meetings and a “History” tab. You can tap a contact to initiate a call. When you’re in a call, your phone jumps to “On-the-go” mode, which increases the size of your buttons, making them easier to hit. It removes the camera option and limits certain options.
Limited experience
The car interface doesn’t include the raise hand feature. However, you can mute, switch Bluetooth devices, or end the call. Instant meeting links only appear in the “Scheduled” tab section. This can make it hard to get into a call unless the event is already on your calendar before connecting to Android Auto.
As evident, Google Meet on Android Auto is a limited experience, which, in all fairness, is understandable considering you’re driving. If you want to try it out, be sure you’re on Google Meet v361.0.92 and Android Auto v16.8.
