
Working with massive volumes of satellite imagery often means wrestling with fragmented datasets, heavy compute requirements, and persistent cloud cover over key locations. To streamline that workflow, Google DeepMind introduced the AlphaEarth Foundations model last year. Now, Google is expanding that capability by announcing the Enterprise Private Preview of Custom Satellite Embeddings, a new data product from Google Maps that moves planetary tracking from static annual snapshots to flexible, high-frequency monitoring.
The virtual satellite engine behind the data
If you’re not aware, AlphaEarth Foundations model converts complex raw satellite imagery into standardized geospatial embeddings available annually through Earth Engine and Google Cloud Storage. It provides a synthesis engine that fuses optical images, elevation data, radar signals, and 3D LiDAR mapping into a single 64-band image representation.
By unifying these varied signals, the model acts like a virtual satellite, creating clear, unobstructed views of the planet even over persistently cloudy regions.
Organizations have previously used these static yearly embeddings to map forest carbon, locate agricultural facilities, and spot landscape shifts without needing dedicated machine learning teams or heavy computing infrastructure.
Shifting from yearly maps to active monitoring
The new Custom Satellite Embeddings feature allows organizations to request tailored data summaries for specific geographical areas across custom timeframes. Instead of waiting for annual updates, teams can now generate summaries on a monthly, weekly, or rolling 5-day basis, depending on input data availability.
This transition to active monitoring is leading to tangible applications in a number of key industries. In addition, farmers and analysts can use the data to monitor crop classification, growing cycles in near real-time, and storm damage mid-season to inform financial forecasts.
Companies can use it to evaluate climate risks, monitor disruptions in agriculture and track compliance with environmental regulations such as the EU Deforestation Regulation for supply chains and retail.
Government agencies in the public sector and utilities can monitor urban growth and damage assessment after disasters. Utility providers, on the other hand, check for vegetation encroachments along power lines and telecom networks.
Access programs and research grants
Commercial teams interested in testing the custom on-demand feature can sign up for the Enterprise Private Preview through the Google Maps Platform site. Additionally, Google is launching a grant program for academic researchers. This program grants free sample datasets via Google Earth Engine.
Qualified university researchers and academic institutions have until September 1 to submit their applications.
