If you use Gemini to run the same daily tasks, Google is making your workflow a lot simpler. The company is officially retiring its custom “Gems” feature in favor of a cleaner setup called “Skills,” bringing reusable prompts directly into the main chat window for both free and paid accounts. The announcement arrived alongside the new Gemini 4 Argon AI model.
First tested in the paid Gemini Spark tier, Skills let you save your go-to instructions without managing a separate sub-menu. Instead, you just type a forward slash in the prompt box, pick your saved Skill, and let the AI handle the rest.
How Skills speed up your daily prompt habits
The biggest advantage here is convenience. You can build a custom Skill to quickly outline slides and craft Q&A talking points for upcoming presentations, set up instructions so Gemini always drafts content in your personal writing style, or force the AI to brainstorm three to five distinct perspectives when evaluating a tough decision. The new system can even notice when you repeat certain prompts in chat and offer to build a custom Skill for you automatically.
Unlike older Gems, you can also stack different Skills together for bigger projects. For instance, you could combine a brand guidelines Skill with a specific writing tone, among many other possibilities. Starting today, Skills let you attach reference files like PDFs, text docs, and images, with Drive support, link sharing, and Gemini Notebook integration arriving over the next few weeks.
What happens to your existing Gems
If you’ve spent time building a library of custom Gems, you won’t have to start over. Google confirmed that all existing Gems will automatically convert into Skills as the transition rolls out.
Personal account holders will see Gems phase out starting in November 2026, which also marks the end of Google’s experimental Opal tool. Enterprise and non-profit Workspace customers will transition in March 2027, and education accounts will do so in June 2027.
