Google’s Tensor chips have been a staple of the Pixel lineup for several years at this point, and it doesn’t look like Google has any plans of abandoning the Tensor lineup anytime soon, as a new leak suggests that Google will be using the Tensor G7 for its upcoming Pixel 12 series phones.
The Pixel 12 series should be launching in the second half of 2027, following Google’s launch of the Pixel 11 series later this year, which will be powered by the Tensor G6 chip. While the leak doesn’t mention any specific details about the Tensor G7 or what it’s capable of, the Tensor’s track record for performance hasn’t been great, and it’s already being rumored that the Tensor G6 won’t be that much better than the Tensor G5. So while it’s unclear how much of an improvement the Tensor G7 will be, users might be skeptical.
The Tensor G7 leak says Google is internally referring to the chip as Lajolla
According to the leak, Google is referring to the Tensor G7 chip as Lajolla internally. So, the more you see this name pop up, the more it’s likely that it’s the Tensor G7 being referenced in relation to whatever the discussion will be. It’s worth noting that this if course, still a rumor. There’s no confirmation that the Lajolla name is what Google internally calls the Tensor G7. So, with that in mind, take the rumor with a grain of salt.
Tensor G7 will probably stick to a 2nm process as that’s what Google plans to move to with the Tensor G6. The Tensor G6 is also reportedly using a variant of the GPU used in the Tensor G5, so it can’t be ruled out yet that Google won’t use this once again for the Tensor G7. If that’s the case, users surely won’t be happy that Google continues to use older hardware in the production of its new chipsets. Then again, manufacturing cost is probably a factor if that happens, so it wouldn’t be surprising.
