App discovery on Google TV isn’t exactly a challenge, but that doesn’t mean that there can’t be simpler ways for people to find and discover new apps to use on the platform. Today during Google I/O 2026, Google announced that it was making new tools available for developers to help make finding new apps to enjoy on Google TV easier.
These are built using the Gemini features that Google launched on Google TV back in March 2026. With these features already live, developers will be able to bake these new discovery tools into the Google TV platform, and users will be able to use Gemini to find more stuff to watch. Basically, developers are getting a series of steps to take with their apps so users can find their content using Gemini.
To help with app discovery, Google TV developers will want to adapt their apps for pointer controls
In addition to Gemini being available on Google TV to simplify finding new apps, Google wants to make navigating the UI while browsing apps more convenient as well. To do this, it’s ensuring that developers are prepared to adapt their TV apps to utilize pointer controls with motion remotes. Not all remotes support pointer controls. For the ones that do however, scrolling through apps on the TV becomes infinitely easier than using a d-pad style button.
Developers that want to make finding their apps easier will want to do a few things Google says. For starters, they’ll want to make sure their app is supportive of hover states. They also need to support cursor clicks and scrollable containers. “Pointer remotes will also have a small circular touchpad for scrolling. Users can use this touchpad to scroll up or down, or left or right in your app. Your app will need to respond to touch events to scroll,” Google says. Gemini is already available on Google TV, and users can access it to discover new content right now.
