Google Fi wireless is rolling out major upgrades focused on international connectivity while also expanding its 5G footprint to new destinations. The company is bringing six new updates to the Unlimited Premium plan, which will be available at no extra cost to users. Google aims to address some of the common headaches while travelling internationally with these.
Google Fi brings international connectivity upgrades and expands 5G coverage
On Pixel phones, Google Fi now uses upgraded dual cellular switching technology that automatically connects to the best available international network in real time. Additionally, Google is also bringing 5G to more regions, adding 22 new countries like Colombia and Morocco. This takes the total to over 110 countries. Google Fi’s data-only eSIM feature allows users to share coverage with up to five extra compatible devices at no additional cost. These include tablets and smartwatches.
Google Fi is also focusing on security. The built-in VPN is now available in more countries, with South Korea and Japan among the latest countries added. It automatically encrypts your connection to keep your data safe on public Wi-Fi networks.
There’s also a limited-time deal
Another upgrade is Wi-Fi Auto-Connect+ (W+), which apparently offers up to twice as reliable connections compared to using cellular alone in crowded indoor areas. The rollout has begun in select parts of Europe and Asia, with London Heathrow Airport being one of the first. Users will get automatic encryption here for added privacy while browsing or streaming.Â
Google is also making it easier to switch carriers before a trip. The Fi app now checks that your SIM and messaging are set up correctly. While travelling, it can also detect network issues and guide users through fixes automatically.
Besides the upgrades, Google is offering a limited-time deal to probably attract new users. Through this, new subscribers can get 50% off the Unlimited Premium Plan for a year. This offer apparently ends June 30th, 2026.
