Deciding between a traditional laptop and a lightweight tablet usually means choosing between serious desktop productivity and portable convenience. Some companies have played around with hybrid factors to solve that. Now, Google confirmed at the Android Dev Summit 2026 that Googlebooks will take a similar path by bringing detachable laptops. This upcoming hardware design aims to combine real desktop computing performance with the everyday freedom of a removable tablet screen.
The initial launch batch of five Googlebook models stuck mostly to familiar clamshell designs alongside a single folding option. Acer offered the sole two-in-one hinge setup with its Acer Googlebook 14 for $899. On the other hand, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo focused on standard laptop bodies. Google’s developer keynote made it clear that detachable screens represent the next major hardware push for the entire platform (via Digital Trends).
Leaked Lenovo hardware and Surface-style designs
In August, we reported on a leaked Lenovo Googlebook tablet featuring a built-in kickstand and a magnetic detachable keyboard. Our exclusive leak also revealed a signature Glowbar light strip sitting right next to the camera module on a compact aluminum body. While official hardware specs remain under wraps, Lenovo looks ready to bring this new device category into retail stores first.
The underlying software still needs some extra polish before these detachable devices hit store shelves for everyday consumers. Current Googlebook OS builds open full-screen apps in portrait tablet mode without running into any noticeable performance hiccups. However, the main desktop home screen, Overview multitasking menu, and the app drawer remain locked in landscape orientation for the time being.
Desktop features and high-end tablet competition
Bringing Googlebook OS to detachable screens raises exciting questions about where high-end Android tablets go from here. A desktop-focused operating system gives users much stronger multitasking tools than traditional mobile software can ever deliver. Having full window management on a detachable tablet could easily make standard Android tablets feel outdated very quickly.
Google has not announced official retail pricing or launch dates for the upcoming detachable hardware lineup just yet. Fine-tuning the desktop software interface for portrait orientation will be key before manufacturing partners start shipping physical devices to consumers.
