Every browser you use wants to be the default option, but there can only be one that you keep going back to. While that’s one side, setting a default option isn’t as straightforward as we’d like. If that one browser is Chrome for you, there’s a positive development, as Google is reportedly further simplifying the process of setting it as the default.
Google Chrome could make it easier to make it your default browser
As said, setting a certain browser as your default option isn’t very seamless. It requires users to head to Windows Settings, find the “Default Apps” section, and finally, make changes there. As evident, this takes more taps than required for something so simple as setting a browser as the default option. It’s not like users have a choice here either.
Google Chrome makes this process easier by opening the Default Apps page when you tap the “Make default” option in the browser. But Chrome doesn’t want to stop there, as it’s reportedly looking to further simplify this experience. As spotted by Windows Report, Google is testing a “Visual Guided Setter” experience to set Chrome as your default browser.

This will guide users
With this, a new default browser page (Chrome://default-browser) will open with visual instructions showing exactly what you need to do. Chrome is preparing an experience that displays the Windows Default Apps page within this guided flow. This will guide users on the buttons to click. If the guide can’t load, the page shows a note and offers a clickable link that opens Windows Settings directly.
So instead of directing users to Windows Settings and making them do the rest manually, this new experience guides them to the final action required to make it the default choice on Windows. That said, it’s not clear when Google will roll out this new experience. It’s also unclear what triggers this experience, whether it’s clicking on “Make default,” through a notification, or by prompt.
