Google Beam is expanding more USO locations globally to connect military families
Google initially introduced a pilot program for the Google Beam, which connected people between Trzebień, Poland, and Fort Bliss, Texas earlier this year. Now, Google Beam is expanding its booths to Grafenwöhr, Germany, and Fort Hood, Texas, as part of the wider release to 20 USO locations worldwide.
In partnership with USO, Google will set up these booths across the globe to make distance feel a little less lonely. For those unaware, Google Beam uses artificial intelligence to produce lifelike 3D video calls. These calls capture body language and eye contact to offer a much more lifelike video-conferencing experience.
The tech helps military personnel share family moments more personally
The HP Dimension hardware-powered tech system helps people feel as though they are sitting across from each other, rather than talking through a regular screen. This can help military personnel take part in family moments they might otherwise miss, from celebrations to everyday conversations.
The company originally introduced Google Beam in May 2021 as Project Starline. However, the company renamed the 3D communication research project to Google Beam at the Google I/O developer conference in May last year.
Apart from installing the new booths, Google has released a docuseries on YouTube. It shows how this setup works in real life. Directed by veteran filmmaker Kyle Hausmann-Stokes, the series follows four families from an armored unit deployed in Poland.
