If you use the Fitbit app on your Android phone, you are about to notice a major change. Google is officially moving forward with its plan to turn the app into Google Health 5.0 via a mandatory update that not only changes the name and the icon but also brings a brand-new, highly customizable home screen widget. The refreshed visuals seek to make tracking your vitals a lot easier.
Your fitness stats, your way
The new Quick Access Widget completely replaces the old, rigid circular steps layout. As reported by 9to5Google, this new widget essentially brings the focus section of your “Today” tab straight to your home screen. It mirrors whatever metrics you choose to prioritize, meaning you don’t have to open the app just to check your progress.
The best part about this update is its flexibility. At its maximum size of 5×3, the widget can display up to six different fitness metrics at the same time. If you prefer a cleaner, minimalist home screen, you can shrink it down to show just a single stat. Even better, each metric acts as a direct shortcut. If you want to see a deeper analysis of your sleep patterns or heart rate, a quick tap on that specific stat takes you straight to its full page inside the app.
Functional shortcuts at a glance
Google also added a few helpful navigation tools right in the margins of the widget. A small heart icon in the top-left corner opens the main app instantly. On the other hand, the buttons on the right side let you manually refresh your data or jump straight to the Health Coach feature. There is also a small timestamp in the center that tells you exactly when the widget last synced with your device. This way, you’ll always know if you are looking at live data.
The future of Fitbit hardware
This software overhaul clears up how Google plans to handle its health brands moving forward. The company is dropping the Fitbit name for its software, using it exclusively for physical wearables like smartwatches and trackers instead. Everything on the digital side now lives under the Google Health banner.
You will actually need this 5.0 update if you plan to buy the company’s latest hardware. Google requires this specific version to set up and configure the new Fitbit Air tracker when it launches next week. The rollout started hitting Android devices on May 19, and the company expects it to reach everyone by May 26.
