Google Assistant is one step closer to being phased out of existence with the launch of Gemini Go, a new replacement for Google Assistant on Android Go phones. If you forgot about Android Go devices, they’re the entry-level phones that come with extremely affordable price tags that were rolled out to certain emerging market regions several years ago.
These devices have low-end specs that are reflected in the price. As such, the types of apps and features that are available for Android Go phones need to be able to work within the confines of those low-end specs. Enter Gemini Go and its recent launch. Unlike the regular version of Gemini on most current Android devices, Gemini Go is meant for devices that have as little as 2GB of RAM. That’s also the minimum requirement. If there’s an Android Go phone out there that has less than 2GB of RAM, it won’t be supported.
The Gemini Go launch is happening as part of an app update
While Gemini has its own app in the standard form, Gemini Go will reportedly be part of an app update. It’s not clear just yet which app update will hold the new feature, but 9To5Google is suspecting it may be Google Go. That would make sense. As Google itself says that Gemini Go is part of the Google Search app. And Google Go is what you would use to Search for stuff, since the Google app is essentially the Search app on standard Android devices.
Google states that Gemini Go “replaces Assistant Go” to “provide a more conversational experience right on your phone.” In terms of features, users can expect a relatively wide range of functions that mirror the capabilities of the regular Gemini. This includes asking Gemini to send texts or or make calls to your contacts, check drive time to work and ask complex questions, setting up day plans, uploading files to Photos and Drive, and even play specific music.
