Google Photos has seen several changes in recent months, with some focusing on design. Last month, reports suggested that the Photos app could soon let users reorder items in the Collections tab. However, we couldn’t see it in action back then, but that’s changing now. A new report from Android Authority offers a glimpse of Google Photos’ customizable Collections tab.
Google Photos could soon make its Collections tab more customizable
They’ve found a dedicated Customize button at the bottom of the Collections tab in Google Photos v7.90.0. It reportedly sits just above the floating bottom bar, separated by the “Send feedback” option. Tapping it opens a simple interface where you can drag and rearrange folders such as On this device, Places, and People & pets.
You can also completely hide some albums, which is a useful addition if you want to reduce clutter in the Collections tab. While you can move around most folders in the tab, the pinned section cannot be moved. You can reportedly hide the pinned items using the same interface.
Its availability remains unclear
The publication had previously spotted an on-screen toast with the Customize button in their previous reporting, but the button wasn’t active at that time. However, it seems like Google Photos has made some progress since then. Android Authority found the customization tool appearing on a Pixel 9, although only with one Google account. The option reportedly disappeared after the app’s data was cleared.
Considering the developments, it’s unclear when Google Photos will roll out the feature. There are chances we may have to wait a while longer. But then, the report cautions that there’s no guarantee that Google will bring it to the app, even though the customization tool appears to be taking shape. So we’ll only know when Google Photos makes an official announcement.
