The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 is an immensely popular new foldable. It broke all kinds of pre-order records for Samsung, and it even managed to do well in durability tests performed by Zack from JerryRigEverything.
Zack also performed a teardown of the device. During that process, we noticed that the main display is quite difficult to pry off in general, let alone without damaging something in the process.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 gets a disappointing repairability score
Well, folks from iFixit managed to get their hands on the Galaxy Z Fold 8, to tell us how repairable the phone actually is. The source released a YouTube video in which the teardown is performed, and the repairability score is announced. You can see that video below.
So, what’s the conclusion? Well, the phone is not exactly easily repairable, while iFixit highlighted some weaknesses too. The source reiterated what Zack said regarding dust protection. While the phone is IP48 rated for water resistance, it’s sensitive to dust. That’s something Samsung warns users against as well.
Dust is its enemy
Folks from iFixit exposed the phone to UV-reactive powder to follow its movement. The phone started producing crunching and grinding sounds after being exposed to it. The device’s main circuitry, cameras, and batteries managed to stay clean; however, the hinge itself was packed with debris.
The outer display was not particularly easy to remove. Reaching the battery or camera module required removing the motherboard and reapplying thermal paste. One out of two batteries can only be accessed by lifting the fragile outer screen.
The plastic bezels around the main display made removing that panel even more of a chore than the outer display. What’s even worse, iFixit says that Samsung had no spare parts available for individual repairers at the time of filming.
