
Samsung isn’t done squeezing every last micrometer out of its camera stack. According to a new report from ZDNet Korea, cited by tipster Ice Universe, the Galaxy S27 Ultra will expand the use of inkjet light-blocking technology across multiple rear lenses, building on tech Samsung first put into mass production for the Galaxy S26 Ultra.
A typical smartphone camera stacks six to eight lens elements, each with an outer rib structure that helps hold everything in place. Light hitting those ribs at sharp angles can bounce around and cause ghosting, flare, and washed-out shots. Samsung’s usual fix has been thin black films sandwiched between lenses to soak up that stray light, but those films, plus their adhesive layers, eat up space Samsung doesn’t have in a module that’s already just a few millimeters thick.
A Coating, Not A Film
Instead of another physical layer, Samsung is now printing matte black light-absorbing material directly onto select lens ribs using inkjet equipment. That shrinks the gap between elements, which frees up room for larger sensors, more ambitious optics, or a beefier OIS system, all without adding thickness.
Don’t expect Samsung to go all in right away. The Galaxy S27 Ultra will reportedly still use conventional films on some lens layers, with the inkjet coating applied selectively while Samsung works out yield, cost, and long-term reliability. That’s consistent with everything else we’ve heard about this phone, from a rumored Sony ultrawide sensor swap to talk that Samsung could finally ditch its long-mocked 3x telephoto camera entirely.
None of this sounds flashy on paper, but it’s exactly the kind of manufacturing refinement that decides how much camera hardware Samsung can actually cram into next year’s flagship.
