If you’re still rocking the original Google Pixel Fold, you might want to brace yourself. A growing number of owners are reporting that the cover display just stops working entirely after a recent software update, and Google has been pretty quiet about it so far.
The whole thing kicked off when a Reddit user over on the r/PixelFold subreddit shared their painful experience with the first-gen foldable. They said the phone had been acting weird for months. Sometimes the cover screen would randomly go black. Other times, it was the inner display that bailed out. A quick reboot always brought things back, so it felt more like a minor software hiccup than anything serious.
Then it got worse. After the battery drained to zero and the phone shut off, the outer cover screen never came back on. The inner display works perfectly fine. The cover screen? Completely black. That’s a nightmare scenario on a phone that originally retailed for $1,799.
A Software Issue, Not a Dead Panel
The interesting part is that the cover screen isn’t actually broken. Every time the Pixel Fold boots up, the outer display lights up and shows the Google logo just fine. The moment Android finishes loading, though, the screen goes dark and stays that way. That points directly at a software bug rather than a busted panel, which is good news and bad news.
The affected user tried everything you’d expect. Safe mode, app preferences reset, hidden display settings, the whole rundown. Nothing fixed it. But the Reddit community came through with a workaround that Google itself hasn’t matched yet. An app called Fold Switcher, available on GitHub and F-Droid, lets you toggle the device setting to “Rear Display” and instantly bring the cover screen back to life. No Shizuku, no advanced setup required.
This isn’t a one-off either. Another user in the thread reported the exact same symptoms after the April 2026 update. That’s a real problem for a phone that already carries durability concerns, and it makes the Pixel 10 Pro Fold look like a much safer bet right now. Google hasn’t acknowledged the bug yet, but if you own a first-gen Fold and your cover screen suddenly ghosts you, the Fold Switcher workaround is worth a shot.
