Remember when the first-gen Samsung foldable launched and people started peeling the protective layer because they thought it was a screen protector? Thankfully by now, most people are aware that you shouldn’t take it off. But in the case of the iPhone Duo, that nano-texture cover is actually replaceable.
iPhone Duo nano-texture cover is replaceable
Now, before you start peeling off that nano-texture cover, don’t. This is because even though the cover for the iPhone Duo display is replaceable, it’s not really meant to be peeled off as you see fit. Instead, it’s designed to be removed in case it gets damaged or if the crease becomes more visible over time.
This was revealed in a recent interview by Angelica Siciliani Fendi with Apple’s VP of hardware engineering, Kate Bergeron. According to Bergeron, the cover can be removed and replaced if necessary. “It’s actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer that you can peel off that layer and get a new one.”
Bergeron stressed that a “significant amount of engineering work” had gone into the layer to ensure it remains in good condition for as long as possible. However, it’s hard to predict how millions of users will use their device or how well they take care of it. So in the event that it needs to be replaced, it can. Plus it won’t cost an arm and a leg.
If you buy AppleCare+ for the iPhone Duo, you can get the cover layer replaced for $19. However, we don’t know how much it will cost if you don’t have coverage. But $19 is actually quite decent. It’s pretty much how much a good screen protector would cost.
The magic trick
Ahead of the iPhone Duo’s launch, there were many rumors suggesting that the phone could be the first creaseless foldable. That didn’t really turn out to be entirely true. It has a crease, but it’s hidden.
This is thanks to the use of the nano-texture cover that basically refracts light to make the crease considerably less visible. Apple uses the same tech for its Pro Display XDR, the Studio Display, the iMac, MacBook Pro, and iPad Pro.
According to those who got an early hands-on, the crease can be felt and seen at certain angles and light. But for the most part, it’s cleverly hidden.
