The launch of the Discord age verification is here with Discord beginning to roll out the change to its service several months after first announcing it. The Discord community did not take kindly to Discord’s push of age verification as initially, it was positioned in a way that would require users to upload images of photo IDs to the servers.
Many users pointed out Discord’s recent (at the time) security issue with leaked government employee information, while also highlighting that Discord’s verification tech would be handled by Persona, a service that has been publicly linked to Palantir co-founder Peter Thiel. Discord didn’t waste much time distancing itself from Persona and quickly backtracked its then planned March rollout of the age verification, stating it would be pushing back the launch, while also attempting to clarify how the verification would work. The time of that launch is now here, and for many users, according to Discord, it’ll be business as usual. And of course, for most users, there will be no requirement to upload any images of a photo ID.
The Discord age verification launch won’t impact 90% of users
Security concerns aside, many users didn’t want to upload images of their photo ID to Discord for privacy reasons, and as of this rollout, Discord says that most users won’t have to. The company believes that 90% of users will end up being designated correctly.
This verification process will take users and place them into one of two categories. Users will either be designated as an adult, or a teen. If you’re designated as an adult, nothing changes. You can use Discord as you always have with no restrictions. If you’re labeled a teen, specific content and settings that are meant for adults will be inaccessible, but Discord states other than that, using the service will be the same.
On the off chance that a user is put into the wrong age group, it’s possible to verify and get placed in the correct one, and all without uploading any photo ID images. If you’re fine with uploading your photo ID, that’s still possible. But there will also be additional methods that include matching your designation with App Store or Google Play age range and a credit card check.
