Owners of the Chromecast with Google TV have reported a growing Wi-Fi bug that disconnects the device after it has been idle for a day or more. In some situations, the Wi-Fi gets turned off on its own. Some users have added that their devices remain connected but show a “no internet” warning. Google has not yet officially acknowledged the issue.
A new Wi-Fi bug is causing trouble for Chromecast with Google TV users
The bug that’s apparently tied to the Wi-Fi of the Chromecast with Google TV is affecting users in different ways. Some users reported that their Chromecast devices automatically disconnect from the Wi-Fi after it sits unused for a day or more. Switching the toggle on restores the connection, but the bug appears again after a while.
On the other hand, some users have said that while their devices remain connected to the Wi-Fi, the device shows a “no internet” warning. At the same time, other devices that are connected to the same network continue to function as usual. This confirms the problem is limited to the Chromecast device only. The issue is affecting both versions of the device. This includes the original 4K Chromecast with Google TV and the cheaper HD model launched in 2022.
Users say the problem appeared after updating their devices
Many users have said that they’re noticing the issue only after updating the device to a new software version released in recent weeks. The impact is especially noticeable for people who use casting, voice commands, or HDMI-CEC to turn on a TV or sound system. They simply cannot start a show or play music without reaching for the remote. Instead, they will first have to reconnect the Chromecast to the network. This is frustrating enough given that there’s no possible fix in sight yet.
Moreover, some users have said that performing a factory reset temporarily fixed the issue. Users who have connected their Chromecast to Ethernet through a USB-C hub, however, say they haven’t experienced the bug. That points toward a possible software or firmware problem with the device’s wireless connection rather than a hardware failure. As said earlier, Google has not yet acknowledged the issue, leaving the users even more frustrated.
